Girona History

Girona is a city that is full of history but many people don’t know that people were living in the area around 2,500 years BC. These people were known as Iberians who were from the Neolithic era. However, the Romans made the biggest impact on Girona (just like they’ve done in many other places in Europe). They built many things that are have even survived till today and they are now very popular with tourists so that people can get a glimpse as to what life was like all that time ago. They built fortresses and so on to make sure that the area was protected. Many years later (in the 11th century) Girona was declared as a city which it still is today.

After this, in the 12th century, most of the people that lived in the Girona area were Jewish. Girona is home to the most important Kabbalistic schools in all of Europe, but not so long after the Jewish community nearly had full control over the city they were forced to leave the area when the Catholic kings made the decision to force them out of the whole Catalonia region. There have been over twenty sieges of Girona in all of its history but one of the most successful ones was when around 40,000 French troops surrounded the entire region and then took control after six months of continuous fighting.
